HOUGHTON, N.Y. – A stingy defense and double-doubles by sophomore forwards Madison Detwiler and Leslie Moose led the Houghton Highlanders past the Medaille Mavericks on Saturday afternoon, 57-48.
 
The Highlanders applied tough defense throughout the game, limiting the number of good looks at the basket for the Mavericks, and dominated the paint.
 
While Medaille capitalized on their own high-pressure defense in the third quarter, cutting a nine-point Houghton lead to one heading into the final quarter, the Highlanders eventually secured the ball to pull away down the stretch.

>> Houghton opened the game on a seven-point run as Detwiler sank a pair of baskets in the paint and Hannah Manwaring drained a three.

In the third quarter, Houghton turned the ball over on five consecutive possessions and the Mavericks ended the period on an 8-0 run.

After Medaille sank pair of free throws, Moose answered with a pair of layups on consecutive possessions and the Highlanders extended their lead to nine.

>> Houghton held Medaille to only 12-of-61 (19.7%) from the floor, though the Mavericks did make seven three-pointers and sank 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the line.

>> The Highlanders dominated the paint, outscoring the Mavericks 22-8 and bosting a 52-37 advantage on the boards.

>> Detwiler led the Highlanders in scoring with 14 points while grabbing 10 boards.  Moose posted 14 rebounds and added 10 points.
 
The double-doubles are the second on the year for each player.
 
>> Elle Reed and Cori Beck each added 11 points apiece for Houghton.
>> Dani Reinwald posted 13 points and 17 rebounds to lead Medaille.
