HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Hannah Manwaring posted a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 12 boards, as the Houghton Highlanders opened their season with a 76-56 victory over Alfred State College on Tuesday.
After playing to a first quarter draw, 14-14, the Highlanders outscored the Pioneers by 16 points in the second quarter, 27-11, and never looked back. While Alfred State played tough the remainder of the way, the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Elle Reed hit a jumper and back-to-back threes. Manwaring quickly followed with a pair of free throws and a layup, giving the Highlanders an eight point lead.
Houghton pulled ahead by as many as 20 later in the quarter when
Madison Detwiler scored in the paint while drawing a foul, then sank the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play.

Cori Beck drained a three and Detwiler scored again in the paint.
Alfred State kept things even from there but only drew to their closest margin within the final seconds.

>> Houghton shot over 45 percent on the night, including nearly 32 percent from beyond the arch. Alfred State shot an impressive 38.5 percent from three, but managed only 31 percent from the floor, overall.
>> Reed scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds and collected four assists for the Highlanders.
>> Sophomores Detwiler and
Brittany Lenart scored 10 and 12 points, respectively, for Houghton.
>> Brittany Gleaton led Alfred State with 10 points and six rebounds.
