Volleyball Picks Up Non-Conference Split at UPB

BRADFORD, P.A. – The Highlanders volleyball team picked up a split on Saturday, winning their opening match against the Franciscan University Barons, before falling in the nightcap to the host University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Panthers.

Houghton battled Franciscan through the first four tight sets, clipping the Barons in the first two games only to see their opponents battle back to win the third and fourth by narrow margins.

With the momentum seemingly in Franciscan's favor, Houghton fought back and separated in the fifth and final set, 15-8.

Houghton carried that victory into the next match against the Panthers, winning the first set, 25-21.  As the Panthers began to rally in the second set, fatigue from the long first match began to set in, and while the Highlanders continued to battle throughout, the host team took the final three sets consecutively.

Coach's Corner
"Once again the girls fought really hard through two long matches.  We pulled out a really good win against Franciscan.  It was disappointing that we couldn't finish against Pitt-Brad, but the girls have really improved in their ability to stay aggressive and fight, regardless." –Coach Nancy Cole

Next Time Out
With potential playoff implications on the line, Houghton will take on conference rival St. John Fisher College on Tuesday at 7:00pm at the Nielsen Center.
