BUFFALO, N.Y. – Houghton volleyball earned a 3-0 victory over D'Youville College on the road Wednesday to improve their record to 10-7 on the season.
The Highlanders won 25-21, 25-14, 25-18.
The team was effective in its offensive attack, with a .236 hitting percentage, but the first half of each set was a battle. The Spartans were neck and neck with the Highlanders throughout the first set, and actually held a late lead, 21-20, but Houghton closed the set with five-straight points to take the win.
Set two was close early, with the hosts closing to 11-9, however Houghton scored 12 of the next 14 points to go up 23-11.
The final set was similar to the first two, as the teams were within a point for much of the set. With the score tied at 14-14, Houghton was able to find some breathing room with six-straight points to go up 20-14, then closed out the match down the stretch.
Meagan Palm (Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Christian) led the attack with 10 kills (.533 kill percentage), while
Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) and
Naomi Prentice (Linwood, NY, York Central) contributed eight kills apiece. Burgher added eight digs.
Kayla Bernard (Aubrey, TX, Cisco CC) led defensively with 15 digs.
Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) finished with 29 assists.
Houghton (10-7) is back in action for a home tri-match with Alfred State and SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, Oct. 3.
