One Down, One Up for Highlanders Volleyball

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Houghton volleyball split two matches on Saturday, losing to Geneva College and knocking off Franciscan University in a tri-match on the road.

In the opening match against the Golden Tornadoes, the Highlanders struggled to get anything going in a 3-0 loss (14-25, 18-25, 24-26).

In the first set, Geneva reeled off 10-straight points to break open a close game. 

Set two featured a seven-point run by the Golden Tornadoes as they cruised to the win. The third set saw Houghton gain some momentum and edge ahead 14-9, but Geneva responded to even the score at 15, and the teams battled back and forth down the stretch. The Highlanders were up 23-22, before Geneva took a 24-23 lead. After Houghton evened it up at 24, the Golden Tornadoes closed out the match with the final two points.

Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) led the way with 11 kills, while Kayla Bernard (Aubrey, TX, Cisco CC) finished with 10 digs and Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) contributed 24 assists.

Houghton battled the host Barons over four games, earning the 3-1 win (25-20, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21). The Highlanders had to hold on in set one after gaining a 20-15 lead. The Barons scored four-straight to make it close, but Houghton finished by scoring five of the final six points. The Barons rebounded with a second set win.

In the third set the Highlanders used a five-point run to gain control, and leading 19-15, scored the final six points of the set. The final set was close early, but the Barons edged ahead 15-10 and still led by five (18-13) before the Highlanders found their rhythm. The visitors scored five-straight, capped by a kill from Erica Barney (Vestal, NY, Vestal), to go ahead 20-19, and the scored five of the final six points to close the match.

Barney was the pacesetter on offense with 12 kills, while tying team-high honors with 14 digs. Bernard chipped in with 14 digs. Meagan Palm (Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Christian) and Burgher each had nine kills, with Burgher also chipping in with 12 digs. Coryell finished with 34 assists.

The Highlanders return to action Wednesday, September 23 when they host Nazareth in the Empire 8 opener.
