Baseball Struggles at the Plate against Ducks

The Houghton College baseball team lost 8-1 and 11-1 against the Stevens Ducks on Saturday afternoon at Houghton College.

After a scoreless first the Ducks took advantage of a Highlander fielding error in the top of the second scoring one run on one hit.

In the bottom half of the fourth the Highlanders took advantage of a Stevens error when Tage Johnson (Jamestown, NY, Frewsburg) hit a single up the middle that scored Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport).

In the next half inning the Highlanders made one costly error that allowed the Ducks to score three runs and take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the fifth the Highlanders got something going with one out and runners on first and second. The Ducks got out of the jam when Knapp grounded into a six four three double play.

Stevens added on four insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

The loss was credited to Seth Cornell (Almond, NY, Alfred-Almond) who only allowed one earned run and struck out four Ducks' batters. The win was credited to Alex Detweiler and the save was given to Bret Viola for the Ducks.

In the box score the Highlanders were led by Bryan Hodge (Thornton, CO, Community Christian) who went two for three for the day.

In Game two the Highlanders struck first in the bottom of the first when Enrico Sukhdeo (Georgetown, Guyana, Ashbrook) led off the inning with a single up the middle and then proceeded to steal second and third. Then with one out Michael Kerr (Brentwood, TN, Hamburg ) grounded out to the shortstop, but it allowed Sukhdeo to score from third and give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.

In the next half inning the Ducks scored a run on two hits to make it 1-1.

The Highlanders looked like they were going to fire right back when Trenton Unverdorben (Portville, NY, Portville) robed double, but the Highlanders failed to take advantage.

In the third Stevens took advantage of another Highlanders fielding error and added on another three runs on three hits.

After a scoreless fourth the Ducks looked like they were going to strike again with runners on first and third and only one out, but Jared Knowlton got a Ducks' batter to ground into a six four three double play and end the inning.

In the sixth, seventh, and eight the Ducks relievers did not let the Highlanders get anything going and they added on seven more runs to make it a 10 run deficit.
The Highlanders failed to get anything going in the ninth against Andrew Hamel who earned the save for the Ducks.

Zeph Walters earned the win improving his record to 2-0 on the year and Jared Knowlton (Gouverneur, NY, Gouverneur ) was credited with the loss for the Highlanders. Knowlton finished the day only allowing three earned runs in six innings of work.

In the box score for game two the Highlanders were led by Kerr who went one for three with an RBI.

The Highlanders are back on the diamond Tuesday in Alfred State for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
