Highlanders Comeback Falls Short in Pitchers Duel

The Houghton College baseball team lost 6-3 to the Ithaca College Bombers on Tuesday evening at Houghton College.

Pitchers Seth Cornell (Almond, NY, Alfred-Almond) and Andrew Sanders looked unhittable in the first four innings neither of them giving up a run and only allowing five hits in the first four innings of play.

In the top of the fifth the Bombers bats woke up. Ithaca scored four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 lead.

After a scoreless sixth and seventh the Bombers added two more to their lead in the top of the eight.

In the bottom half of the inning the Highlanders bats woke up. Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada, Homeschool) hit a single and then Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport) was hit by a pitch with two outs to put runners at first and second. Michael Kerr (Brentwood, TN, Hamburg ) came through with a two RBI double to score Knapp and McKay. An error by the Bombers left fielder allowed Kerr to score from third and cut the Bombers lead to three. The rally forced Bombers coach George Valesente to bring in pitcher Jimmy Wagner.

Wagner halted the comeback only allowing one hit and earning the save for the Bombers.

Cornell was credited with the loss, but pitched great going seven and two thirds, only allowing three earned runs, and striking out 10 Bombers' batters.
Sanders was credited with the win.

The Highlanders are home again Friday night when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology in game one of the weekend series at 6 p.m.
