Highlanders Come From Behind, Slip Past A-State

 
ALFRED, N.Y. – A foul call with one second remaining in the game gave Alfred State the chance to send the game into overtime.  After sinking the first shot the second came up short, giving the Houghton Highlanders another thrilling come-from-behind victory, 84-83.
 
After trailing by five at halftime, the Highlanders fought back in the second half, taking a five point lead only to see what appeared to be a secure win turn in to a last-second heart-stopper.

Game Flow
      >Houghton jumped out to a 12 point lead midway through the first half, but Alfred State made runs of 14-0 and 9-0 in the remaining 10 minutes take a five point lead into the half.
      >The Pioneers led by six with just under 10 minutes to play when a Dylan Lambert (Amherst, NY, Williamsville North) three, a Phil Pellegrino (Rochester, NY, Alfred University) jumper and a Brandon Camacho (Dundee, NY, Dundee High School) free throw tied the game with 7:16 remaining.
      >A pair of Camacho free throws put the Highlanders up by six with 16 seconds to play, but a Pioneer three pointer pulled them within two with five seconds on the clock. 
 
After two missed free throws by the Highlanders and a subsequent Pioneer rebound, Alfred State made a dash up the court when a foul call gave the Pioneers two free throws and a chance to tie.  The shooter sank the first but came up short on the second, giving Houghton the win.
 
Analysis:
      >While A-State held advantages in shooting percentage from both the floor and the line, Houghton sank two more field goals than the Pioneers and made three more shots from beyond the arch.
      >The Highlanders forced 24 turnovers—from which they scored 25 points—and gave away only 15.
 
Clutch Performances:
The Highlanders:
      >Camacho went 7-11 from the floor and 7-10 from the line, finishing the night with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
      >Tyler McQuaid (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian Academy) picked up his first double-double of the year, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
      >Pellegrino and Jordan Scott (Burlington, ON, Canada, Notre Dame Secondary) chipped in with 13 points apiece.
     
The Pioneers:
      >D'Ondre Davis scored 14 points on 5-6 shooting and brought down nine rebounds
      >Quadrelle Roberts and Marquis Edwards scored 19 and 16 points, respectively.
 
Next Time Out:
Houghton heads into the break and will resume play on Tuesday, January 5 when they travel to Oneonta, NY to take on the Hartwick Hawks at 6:00 p.m. in their first conference matchup of the season.
