PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Houghton volleyball improved to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8 Conference with a 3-0 win over St. John Fisher on the road Wednesday.
 
Scores were 25-18, 25-17, 25-20.
 
After falling behind early in set one, the Highlanders settled into a groove with a 9-4 scoring run to go up 20-14. Houghton never trailed in set two, building a 12-6 lead and pushing the advantage to as many as nine (19-10) before closing it out. The final set looked to be all Highlanders, who scored six-straight after giving up the first point, but the Cardinals drew even at nine points. A seven-point run gave the Highlanders a 17-10 lead, however the hosts made it interesting with six-straight points before Houghton was able to finish it off.
 
"The girls played really well tonight against a solid Fisher team," said Head Coach Nancy Cole. "It was definitely a team effort. We did not break down in the 3rd like in previous matches, which is a goal we have been trying to reach."
 
Meagan Palm (Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Christian) led the attack with eight kills. Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) added six kills and 11 digs, while Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) and Kayla Bernard (Aubrey, TX, Cisco CC) contributed 19 assists and 27 digs, respectively.
 
Houghton (13-7, 3-1 E8) is back in action when they host an E8 trimatch with Alfred and Hartwick on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The Cardinals drop to 10-9, 1-3 E8.
