BROCKPORT, NY—Some days you just wish you could hit the "undo" button at the top of life's screen.
A first half goal off an offensive gaffe put Houghton men's soccer team in a hole they couldn't climb out of Wednesday night as the Highlanders dropped a non-conference matchup to SUNY Brockport 2-0.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 5-4-2 overall, while the Golden Eagles improved to 7-2-2
If the loss itself wasn't enough to bear, Houghton captain and starting center back
Jesse Toth (Victor, NY, Victor) left the game early in the second half with what appeared to be a possible knee injury.
Though the Highlanders outshot the Golden Eagles in the first half 9-5, Brockport finished when they had the chance. In the 29
th minute, a Houghton defender tried to dribble the ball out of the defensive third and ran into Brockport's Connor Melanophy, literally. Melanophy accepted the gift and quickly deposited it into the goal to give Brockport the lead.
In the second half the Golden Eagles capitalized on Toth's departure and the increased pressure to mount an attack, holding a 9-6 advantage in shots.
In the 59
th minute Brockport capitalized on their opportunity. Collin Goettel placed a shot on goal, which Houghton keeper
Jacob Dunnett (Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Kennebecasis) deflected into the air to an onrushing Mark Sylvia, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
Dunnett would finish the game with six saves for the Highlanders.
Houghton returns home on Saturday when they will take the pitch against conference rival Ithaca College at 3:30 p.m. on Burke Field.
