ONEONTA, N.Y. – Elizabeth Piszker (Glens Mills, PA, Cardinal O'Hara) recorded 22 saves and
Kristin McKane (Clayville, NY, Mount Markham) scored the game-winner in overtime as Houghton field hockey earned a 1-0 win over SUNY Oneonta on the road Saturday.
McKane's game-winner, her seventh goal of the season, came in the 85
th minute off an assist from
Ashley Hughes (Fairport, NY, Fairport High School).
The Highlanders got a huge game from Piszker who was tested early and often, facing nine shots and seven penalty corners over the first 16 minutes.
By the time the first half ended, Piszker had recorded 12 saves. Oneonta outshot the Highlanders, 20-2, in the opening 35 minutes. Penalty corners were 15-1 in Oneonta's advantage.
The Highlander defense tightened up in the second half, allowing just 11 shots off 13 penalty corners. Piszker made six saves in the second half.
Kelsie Ashley (Landisville, PA, Hempfield HS) almost won it in regulation, but her shot in the final 30 seconds was blocked.
The teams played through 14 minutes of extra time before McKane sent the Highlanders home with the victory.
Oneonta finished with a 38-12 shots advantage (22-4 on goal) and a 32-5 edge in penalty corners.
Houghton (7-5) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they host Ithaca in an E8 matchup.
