All-around Team Effort in Victory over Nazareth

HOUGHTON, N.Y— It was an all-around team effort in the Highlanders' Tuesday night victory over the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College. Tied with just 22 seconds left in the game, Houghton worked together to put away the 65-60 victory.

The two teams found themselves tied numerous times within the first 4 minutes of the game. Nothing on the offensive was again sparked until nearly halfway through the first period.

Two successful free throw attempts by Phil Pellegrino (Rochester, NY, Alfred University) fueled the scoring. Tyler McQuaid (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian Academy) continued the trend by scoring two additional free throws. Down by 2, Pellegrino's 3-point shot would put Houghton ahead 18-17. Going point for point, the two teams found themselves tied yet again--compliments to another Pellegrino 3-pointer.

With 1:46 left in the game, the 2 points from McQuaid as well as a 3-pointer from Brandon Camacho (Dundee, NY, Dundee High School) would close out the first half with a 27-25 Houghton lead.

The Highlanders didn't waste any time in the second period, scoring 6 points by three different Highlanders; Pellegrino, McQuaid, and Johnathan Stowe (Toronto, ON, Canada, Don Mills Collegiate Institute) in just over a minute. Nazareth began to battle back, tying the game 36-36.

After minimal scoring, the spark was ignited when Brennen Campbell (Perry, NY, Perry Central) sank a 3-point shot. Jordan Scott (Burlington, ON, Canada, Notre Dame Secondary) and Stowe helped in Campbell's efforts, giving the Highlanders an 11 point, 52-41 lead.

Yet again, the Golden Flyers began to put up a fight. John Nelson (Houghton, NY, Christian Academy in Japan) and Camacho's 3-point shots sandwiched Stowe's dunk. Up 11 points with 1:54 remaining in the game, Nazareth drastically minimized the gap.

With a 61-60 Houghton lead with 22 second left in the game, it couldn't have been a more perfect time for Camacho and Campbell to capitalize on 2 free throws each. As a result, they sealed the 65-60 Houghton victory.

Pellegrino and Camacho led the way with 13 points on the night, followed by Stowe with 11 points of his own. McQuaid, Scott, Campbell, and Nelson all tied with 7 points each.

The Highlanders (5-6,1-2) look forward to their next game where they will play away at Alfred University with a start time of 8 p.m.
