HOUGHTON, N.Y.— The Men's Basketball team matched their conference opponent, Stevens Institute of Technology, nearly point for point in the first half of Friday night's game. However, it was in the second half when the Ducks increased their lead extensively, confirming the 81-63 victory.
While the two teams found themselves tied 7-7 within the first few minutes of the game, the trend continued and yet again were tied halfway through the first half.
After a 9-7 neck and neck run, Houghton remained on the Ducks' heals, down 22-20 with 4 minutes left in the half.
Numerous Highlanders including
Tyler McQuaid (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian Academy),
Brandon Camacho (Dundee, NY, Dundee High School), and
Phil Pellegrino (Rochester, NY, Brighton) contributed in the final minutes of the half. Unfortunately, Stevens pushed forward and maintained a 6 point, 33-27 lead.
By scoring early and often in the second half, Stevens was able to offset the 3-pointers from Camacho,
Jordan Scott (Burlington, ON, Canada, Notre Dame Secondary), Pellegrino, and
Brandon Johnson (Philadelphia, NY, International Christian).
With an 18 point, 60-42 Stevens lead and nearly 10 minutes remaining in the game,
Brennen Campbell (Perry, NY, Perry Central) concluded the 13-13 run by sinking 2 free throws.
An 81-63 Stevens' win would be confirmed just moments later.
Camacho was credited with 12 points while going 6-6 at the free throw line. McQuaid followed with 11 points. Both Scott and Pellegrino earned 9 points on the night. Campbell claimed 8 points while going 6-6 at the free throw line.
Houghton (5-12,1-8) is back in action tomorrow (1/31) where they will play at home against the Hawks of Hartwick College at 4 p.m.
