Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Highlanders Fall Short to Hartwick, 62-43

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The Women's Basketball team found themselves in a tough match-up against the Hawks of Hartwick College. Finding themselves outscored in nearly every category, Houghton would drop to 3-6 on the season in the 62-43 loss to Hartwick.

Within the first five minutes of the game, there was a 9-7 run amongst the two teams--Highlander lead. After taking turns scoring, Houghton's Hannah Manwaring (Barton, NY, Tioga Central HS) scored a 3-pointer to tie the game 14-14. Houghton was unable to hold on due to the Hawks' rally. While being interrupted only minimally, Hartwick left the first period with a 34-20, 14-point lead.

Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) was credited with 8 points in the first period, followed by Manwaring with 6 points while shooting 67% at the 3-point arch.

From the start of the second period to just over 7 minutes left in the game, the two teams went back and forth between capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Pipher, Manwaring, and Hannah Fink (Coudersport, PA, Coudersport HS) helped keep the Highlanders afloat to this point.

Down 49-34, Houghton allowed for Hartwick to take 13 more points before the end of the game. A layup and free throw by Pipher, as well as 3-pointer and free throw by Manwaring helped ease the 62-43 loss to Hartwick.

Again, Pipher contributed offensively in the second period with 8 points, followed by Manwaring with 7 points of her own.

The Highlanders are back in action tomorrow, January 3rd, where they will play away against Stevens Institute of Technology with a start time of 3 p.m.
