Women's Basketball Tops SUNY Oswego 65-58

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Three Highlanders produced double-doubles and senior Christel Enriquez-Fisher (Colorado Springs, CO, William Mitchell HS) scored the team's final 12 points to lead Houghton to a 65-58 victory over SUNY Oswego on Tuesday.

While the Lakers managed to score the first basket of the game, it was just under a minute later when Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) answered back for the Highlanders. It took Oswego three minutes to gain a 8-2 lead over Houghton. A layup by Hannah Fink (Coudersport, PA, Coudersport HS) and a free throw by Pipher allowed for the Highlanders to minimize the gap.

While Oswego continued to push forward to 13 points, Houghton stayed on their heels with the help of a layup by Pipher, jumper by Fink, and 3-point shot by Hannah Manwaring (Barton, NY, Tioga Central HS). With 11:40 left in the first half, the Highlanders were trailing a close 13-12.

The Lakers soon took a short-lived 15-12 lead. It was 15 seconds later when another Manwaring 3-point shot started tied the game and started a rally. Soon after Houghton found themselves with an 18-17 lead, Oswego managed to have a rally of their own, scoring 7 in a row. Down by 6 with nearly 4 minutes left in the first period, three different Highlanders each contributed a layup to make it a 1 point deficit, 24-25.

With 43 seconds left in the period, Houghton tied the game 26-26. Two free throws by Fink put the Highlanders over the top, closing out the half with a 2 point lead.

Houghton continued their scoring spree, only minimally interrupted by the Lakers. Yet another successful Manwaring 3-pointer, as well as a layup by Grace Bealor (Haddonfield, NJ, Haddonfield, HS) helped give the Highlanders a 35-28 lead.

The two teams continued to take turns on scoring; it was a consecutive layup and free throw by Pipher that broke the pattern. Bealor's layup gave the Highlanders an 11 point lead.

Up 44-33 with 13:40 left in the game, Pipher was responsible for 4 of the 6 Houghton points to follow. Oswego continued to inch up to a 50-44 trail. Manwaring claimed her fourth and final 3-point shot of the day, setting the tone for the remainder of the game.

Enriquez-Fisher took matters into her own hands by scoring the remainder of Houghton's points all on her own. Three layups and six free throws later, Houghton earned the 65-58 win.

Pipher, Enriquez-Fisher and Manwaring each turned in double-doubles.Both Pipher and Enriquez tied to lead Houghton's offensive game with 16 points each. Pipher added 15 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals, while Enriquez-Fisher added 12 boards and five assists. Manwaring finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Fink ended with 10 points and seven points rebounds

The Highlanders outrebounded the Lakers, 54-40.

The Highlanders (3-2) look forward to their next game at home on Saturday, December 6th against Allegheny College with a start time of 2:00 p.m.
