ELMIRA, N.Y.-- The Houghton Field Hockey went into overtime in this afternoon's game against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles, losing the battle 3-2.
From the start of the game, Houghton was able to put pressure on the Elmira defense. In the time span of just 1 minute 30 seconds, the Highlanders took shots on 3 different occasions as well as having 3 penalty corner opportunities. While they were unable to score, just over 15 minutes later
Kelsie Ashley (Landisville, PA, Hempfield HS) put one in the net; her second goal of the season.
While the Soaring Eagles were unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities, they were able to do so only 3 minutes 16 seconds into the second period. With the game tied 1-1, the Eagles were able to successfully work the ball up the field, yet again scoring.
Regardless of the Highlanders being down 2-1, they answered back. With 6 minutes left in the period,
Colleen Sullivan (Salem, CT, East Lyme HS) tied the game 2-2 off of a rebound shot from
Hannah Zgrablich (Furlong, PA, Plumstead Christian); forcing the Highlanders and Soaring Eagles into overtime.
Overtime did not last long; 52 seconds into the game, Elmira brought the ball in and shot the ball just over Houghton goalie
Elizabeth Piszker (Glens Mills, PA, Cardinal O'Hara). The Soaring Eagles walked away with a 3-2 overtime win.
Piszker contributed with an impressive 14 saves on the night.
Houghton looks forward to their game on Wednesday, October 29th where they will play away against SUNY Brockport at 6pm.
