FREDONIA, N.Y.-- The Highlander Volleyball team lost 3-2 in a close match Thursday evening to the Blue Devils of SUNY Fredonia.

Going into the opening set, the Highlanders knew the Blue Devils would prove to be tough competition. The initial momentum was taken away from Fredonia by Houghton winning the first set 25-23.

Fredonia pushed forward and tied the match 1-1 by taking the second set 25-22.

Both the third and fourth sets called for the "win by 2" rule. 28-26 was the final score for the third set, with the Blue Devils on top. Up 2-1 in the match, Fredonia was unable to claim the win by losing the fourth set 26-24.

The Highlanders forced a fifth set, which would turn out to be yet another neck and neck set. Unfortunately, Houghton was unable to confirm the win--losing 17-15.

In all 5 sets, both teams were within 2-3 points of one another, showing the intensity of the match. 

Both Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) and Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Christian) were each credited with a double-double; Burgher with 15 kills and 27 digs, and Compeau with 17 kills and 16 digs. Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) led the way defensively with 39 digs.

Houghton (13-10) looks forward to their two matches on Saturday, October 25th where they will participate in the Empire 8 Crossover at Alfred University. The Highlanders will open with Alfred at 11am, followed by Hartwick at 1:30pm.
