HOUGHTON, N.Y.-- In Wednesday evening's match, the Houghton Volleyball team dropped 3 of 5 sets to the Pioneers of Alfred State, bringing the Highlanders to a 9-8 current season record.
The Pioneers were able to take the first set by a close score of 23-25. The Highlanders would then tie the match 1-1 by winning the second set 29-27, of which the "win by 2" rule was implemented.
Alfred came back strong in the third set (25-16) to put themselves ahead of the Highlanders 2-1 in the match. Houghton would then answer back in set 4 with a 25-15 victory of their own, forcing a 5th set.
The fifth and final set went "neck and neck" with Houghton just falling short to Alfred, losing 15-12.
Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian),
Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes), and
Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Christian) were all credited with a double-double; Burgher with 11 kills and 24 digs, Coryell with 30 assists and 11 digs, and Compeau with 10 kills and 17 digs.
Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) contributed defensively with 33 digs, followed by
Alyssa Quimby (Northglenn, CO, Community Christian) with 14 of her own.
The Highlanders are back in action this weekend where they will host the Empire 8 Crossover on Saturday, October 4th. Houghton plays Ithaca College at 11am, followed by Utica College at 4pm.
