Coach Alicia Mucher was named the Highlander head women’s basketball coach in 2012, becoming the 10th coach in the program’s history. In 2018 she was named Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Operations. In that role she is charged with practice and game scheduling, student-athlete discipline cases and spearheading professional development in recruiting for coaches.

In her first season on the sideline, she guided the Highlanders to a 10-16 mark and an appearance in the NCCAA East Region Championship game. Most recently, she helped her team to a a mark of 13-13 and the program's first appearance in the Empire 8 postseason tournament.

Mucher is a 2003 graduate of Houghton College, where she was a four-year Highlander athlete, and received her master of science degree in physical education/exercise and sport science from the University of Central Missouri.

She brings a great passion for coaching at the college level. Her coaching experience prior to being named head coach spans nine years, beginning at Houghton as women’s basketball assistant coach and head junior varsity coach, and continuing as head coach of two competitive programs in the largest high school division in Colorado. She most recently served as a varsity assistant on the high school level in West Lafayette, Ind.

As a former Houghton athlete, coach, and recruiting coordinator, Mucher is passionate about continuing the strong Houghton tradition of sports competition and ministry. She was involved in a number of international sports ministry trips to Czech Republic as a student-athlete and had led two of her own teams to trips to Nicaragua.

“As a head coach, my goal is to recruit athletes who bring strong character and Christian faith, are academically prepared, and are committed to working hard on the court,” stated Mucher. “I believe my role is to develop players who can compete in their sport, but also to mentor young women who passionately seek the Lord and follow Him at home, at work, and in their communities.”

In addition to her coaching and administrative duties at Houghton, she served four years as the national chair for women's basketball for the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Mucher scored 1,353 points during her Highlander career, while tallying 359 assists, 279 steals, and 161 made three-pointers. When she graduated, her point total ranked No. 2 all-time in Houghton women’s basketball history. She was honored by the Northeast Atlantic Conference as a second team selection in 1998-99 and 1999-2000, earned honorable mention honors in 2001-2002, and was a First Team All-American Mideast Conference honoree following her senior campaign.

She and her husband, Jason, live in Houghton with their three children (Jadyn, Campbell and Emalyn).
