4306Luckey, the Highlander lion mascot, was introduced to the campus on February 6, 2016 [ See the video introduction ] While the "Highlander" has taken on many forms over the last 50 years, this is the first "official" mascot endorsed by the college and is designed to instill school spirit at home athletics contests while building pride in the college at other on-campus and off-campus events.

Luckey was selected as the mascot name in the fall of 2017 after nominations and voting among students, faculty, staff and alumni. The name is significant in Houghton history as the college's first president was James S. Luckey.

We hope you enjoy interacting with Luckey wherever you may see it.

Why the Lion?
The mascot is representative of the lion image that appears on the official Highlanders logo, which features a waving flag and a rampant lion similar to what appears on the Royal Banner of Scotland. The rampant lion is shown as a profile of a lion standing upright, with forelegs raised as if to strike. The lion itself represents authority, strength, power, royalty, justice and courage. From a Biblical perspective, the lion depicts authority and power, with Christ referred to as the Lion of Judah.

A secondary logo featuring just the lion has often been used on various team uniforms and equipment, social media, facility banners and in apparel and gear sold at the college campus store over the past 10 years.

Where will Luckey appear?
Luckey roams the sidelines at select home athletics contests, but is also used at on-campus and off-campus admission, advancement and alumni events. Luckey is also available to appear at events and organizations in surrounding communities. You can also follows the adventures of Luckey on this page and on social media.

Why does Luckey wear jersey #83?
Luckey's #83 jersey represents 1883, the year Houghton was founded.
