Recruiting Policies

General Policies and Procedures Regarding the Recruitment of Prospective Student-Athletes

Recruitment of PSA's at Houghton College is undertaken in light of the mission and purpose of the institution and within the philosophy, goals and core values of intercollegiate athletics. Recruitment of student athletes is the responsibility of the coaches associated with each sponsored sport at Houghton College in consultation with their direct supervisor, the Executive Director of Athletics, the Compliance Director and the appropriate personnel in the Admissions Office.

These policies apply to all Athletics Department coaches and staff, as well as to those who represent the athletics interest of the institution, including alumni, boosters, parents, and other faculty and staff at the college.

No head or assistant coach may recruit unless they have received a score of 80% or better on the NCAA Division III rules test.

According to NCAA Bylaw 13.02.8.1, actions by staff members or athletics representatives that cause a PSA to become a recruited PSA at that institution are:
1. Providing the prospect with an official visit,
2. Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospect or the prospect's parent(s), relatives, or legal guardian(s), or
3. Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospect, the prospect's relatives, or legal guardian(s) on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment.

All coaches are required to make contact with PSA's through their normal recruitment process and in alignment with all Houghton College, Empire 8, and NCAA rules.

All students deemed to be PSA's, should be submitted on a regular basis to the Admissions Office via the appropriate software (Goldmine) or Excel Spreadsheet by the head coach. These students will then be added to the admissions mailing list and all pertinent admissions information will be sent to the PSA, including an application.

RECRUIT TRACKING PROCESS
The head coach will track all PSAs until their final status is known. The following information, pertaining to each recruit, will be recorded immediately with the Admission Office upon the coach's knowledge of that information:
1. When the Houghton College coach ceases to recruit the student athlete, or
2. When the student athlete is no longer interested, or
3. When the student athlete enrolls at another institution, or
4. When the student athlete enrolls at Houghton College.

At all times in the recruiting process, it is expected that the Admissions Office and members of the coaching staff will maintain regular and immediate contact with each other.

The head coach is required to explain to the PSA basic NCAA recruiting rules and the penalties involved if the rules are violated. The head coach should also, if possible, explain these rules and penalties to the parents or legal guardians of PSAs, as well as to their high school or club coaches.
