Houghton University cross country turned in a pair of strong team performances Saturday at the Hamilton College Short Course XC Invitational, with both the women's and men's teams finishing third overall while earning the top finish among Empire 8 competitors.
Women's Cross Country
The Houghton women were led by a standout performance from junior Emberlynn Nolt, who captured the individual title in the 4K race with a personal-best time of 14:52.8. It marked the first collegiate race victory for Nolt, who finished more than 32 seconds ahead of the next Houghton runner.
Senior Aria Larson followed closely in sixth place overall at 15:25.2, giving the Highlanders two runners among the top six finishers. Sophomore Amy Collins placed 22nd in 15:54.4, while senior Risa Palmer finished 28th in 16:05.9 and junior Jenna Binney rounded out Houghton's five scorers in 33rd at 16:15.2.
Houghton finished third in the team standings with 79 points, trailing only Roberts Wesleyan and host Hamilton. The Highlanders' top-five runners posted an average time of 15:42.7 with a 1:22.4 spread between the first and fifth scorers.
Men's Cross Country
The Houghton men also secured a third-place team finish, totaling 106 points in the 5K race. Sophomore Henry Sardina led the Highlanders with a 10th-place finish in a personal-best 16:16.0.
Senior Luke Ellis followed in 23rd at 16:29.7, with junior Connor Little close behind in 24th at 16:31.5. Sophomore Evan Geer placed 34th in 16:47.0, and sophomore Kurt Akins completed Houghton's scoring five in 44th at 17:06.5.
The Highlanders finished just one point behind fourth-place Utica and two points behind second-place Roberts Wesleyan, while finishing ahead of Nazareth by two points. Houghton's top five runners averaged 16:38.1, with a 50.5-second spread from first to fifth.
