COCOA, Fla. -- The Houghton softball annual spring trip to Florida came to a close Saturday with two losses to Mt. Marty in Cocoa, Fla.
The Highlanders lost 8-0 in the opener and 11-2 in game two.
In game one, the Lancers held the Highlanders without any hits to earn the shutout. Mt. Marty scored their runs in the first (2), third (1), fifth (2) and sixth (3) innings.
Olivia Carr got the start on the mound, allowing eight runs on 13 hits. She struck out five and walked three batters.
The nightcap saw the Highlanders score twice, despite registering just one hit on the day. Both runs came in the bottom of the first after the Lancers had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the inning.
Lydia Peterson and
Danielle Nelson each walked to open the inning before
Jennifer Page grounded out to advance both runners. A groundout by
Victoria Quintana scored Peterson and moved Nelson to third. Then Nelson scored on an error from 3B with
Kareena Ulfig at the plate. Peterson had Houghton's only hits, a single in the fourth inning.
Ulfig pitched three innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks.
Keri Wesneski came on in relief, allowing four runs on seven hits and five walks.
