Softball Loses Twice on Tuesday in Florida

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Houghton softball remained winless on the 2024 season after dropping 11-0 and 10-0 decisions at the USSSA Space Coast Complex on Tuesday.

In the opener, it was the Rose Hulman Fightin' Engineers that took the 11-0 win in 5 innings. Game two was a 10-0 loss to Grove City.

In game one, Rose Hulman allowed just two hits from the Highlanders while belting out 10 of their own and scoring runs in the first (1), third (3), fourth (2) and fifth (5). Kareena Ulfig had both Houghton hits in the contest. Freshman Keri Wesneski got the start on the mound, allowing six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. She added one walk and one strikeout. Alisabeth Crandall pitched 1.1 innings in relief, allowing five runs on three hits, walking three and striking out two.

Against Grove City, the Wolverines got out to a quick three-run lead in the top of the first, and after scoring a single run in the third, they added six more over the final two innings. Once again, the Highlanders could only manage two hits in the game, with Chyanne Bushyhead and Keri Wesneski each tallying a single. Wesneski and Lydia Peterson each had a stolen base. Houghton fielders committed five errors.

On the mound, Olivia Carr picked up the loss, going six innings while allowing seven runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out one. Crandall pitched the final inning, allowing three runs on three hits.

"We did not take control of the things we could control," said Head Coach Chad Muise. "We will look to rebound later this week playing softball the way we believe we can, ready to compete."
