Softball Earns Program Record Win #14

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton softball set a program mark with its 14th win of the season in a two-game split with Elmira on Wednesday.

Houghton was 8-2 in the opener to set the record before losing 10-1 in the second game.

The Highlanders reached 13 wins on two occasions previously (2018 and 2019).

Game 1
The Highlanders scored six times in the bottom of the first to take control. They were sparked by a triple from Hannah Haskell, and after a fielder's choice, two errors, a walk and another passed ball, the scored was 4-0. Barb Richert delivered another triple to score two more runs and cap the scoring for the frame.

Elmira were able to pull back two runs, but the Highlanders got two scores late for the final margin.

Barb Richert was 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBI. Grace Thompson added two hits for the hosts, who finished with nine as a team.

Kayla Loomis went the distance for the win, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.

Game 2
The nightcap didn't go as well for the Highlanders as their bats dried up and the Soaring Eagles produced 14 hits.

The Highlanders got on the board first after a solo homer from Haskell. But Elmira scored four times in the fourth and added two more in the sixth and four in the seventh to claim the victory.

Alisabeth Crandall started on the mound, allowing nine runs on 13 hits over six innings. Jen Burrows pitched an inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit, walking one and striking out one.

The games were considered non-conference contests. The teams will play their official E8 games later in the season.

Houghton (14-11) returns to action for an E8 doubleheader Friday at Nazareth. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m.
