ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Houghton softball was swept by Elmira College on Friday, dashing any hopes the Highlanders had of advancing to the Empire 8 Tournament.
Houghton needed to win at least one of the games to keep their chances alive, but the visitors were shutout in both contests, 10-0 and 4-0, to end their record-breaking campaign with a record of 20-17. They had a 6-8 mark in Empire 8 play.
Game 1
Elmira used an 8-run third inning, tallying nine hits including two homeruns, to take control. They added two more runs in the fourth. Houghton struggled to get any offense going, recording just two hits in the contest.
Kayla Loomis struggled to get going on the mound, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over three innings. She struck out four.
Jen Burrows pitched an inning of relief, allowing two runs on two hits.
Game 2
The Houghton bats were silenced again in the nightcap as they managed just four hits. The Soaring Eagles scored two runs in both the first and fifth innings.
Jen Burrows scattered 11 hits over six innings, allowing four runs and striking out one batter.
