HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton softball split with Alfred University on Thursday in a home doubleheader. The 4-3 win in game one marked the first win for the Highlanders over the Saxons since Houghton relaunched the softball program in 2012. Houghton had gone 0-18 in their previous meetings. The Saxons claimed a 5-3 win in the second game.
Game 1
Houghton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Adelynn Killian laced a two-run homer over the fence. The Saxons scored a run in the top of the second to pull the scored to 2-1, but Houghton responded with another run in the bottom of the second to push the advantage back to two runs. The Highlanders were aided by a walk, an error and two batters hit by a pitch.
The visiting Saxons scored runs in the top of the third and the top of the fifth to even the score at 3-3, but the Highlanders found the winning run in the bottom of the fifth to claim the win.
Hannah Haskell reached on a single to lead off the inning, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on a sac fly to center by
Carlee Miller.
Haskell and Killian had the only hits for the Highlanders, but they were enough.
Kayla Loomis went the distance on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits.
Game 2
Haskell staked the Highlanders to another 2-0 first inning lead with her third homer of the season, and the Highlanders added another run in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0. They would hold that advantage through five innings, but the Saxons broke through with four runs in the top of the sixth to go up 4-3.
Alfred added an insurance run in the seventh to claim the win and got a strong finish from reliever Megan Bennett, who came on in the sixth and struck out all six Highlanders she faced.
Lydia Peterson and
Elise Swanson each had two hits to lead Houghton.
Loomis pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits.
Jen Burrows went 1.1 with four earned runs and three walks.
Houghton (16-15; 4-6 E8) is back in action when they travel to take on Alfred State on Tuesday for games at 3 and 5 p.m.
