Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Alfred State

HOUGHTON, NY—  Houghton softball defeated Alfred State twice on Wednesday evening, earning 9-1 and 8-0 victories over the Pioneers, and reached a program record with 12 wins on the season.

Game 1: The Highlanders exploded right of the bat with four runs coming from Taylor Sile's grounded out, a couple of wild pitches, and Tanya Hatton's single. Houghton firms the win in the fifth inning with five runs for insurance.
 
Hatton (5-9), who went 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs, won the pitching duel striking out six and only surrendered one run on four hits.
 
Game 2: The Highlanders set the tone early as Katie Jones smashed one home to center field in the first inning. Jones went on to have a spectacular showing notching her first extra-base hits on the season with a double and triple along with her homer.
 
In the third and fifth innings, the Highlanders added seven runs on singles, doubles and a triple to round up the series against Alfred State.
 
 In the circle, Kaylee Jentsch (7-6) proved to be the better pitcher striking out a career-high of seven.
 
KEY STATS:
>> Zero Highlanders struck out in game one while only three struck out in game two.
 
>> Both teams got a total of four hits each in game one.
 
>> In game two, Jones went 3-for-3 earning three runs scored with two RBIs. Caitlyn Cybart and Sile went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
 
>> Houghton outhit the Pioneers 11-3.
 
UP NEXT: The Highlanders will close the regular season on the road and face Empire 8 competition Nazareth College on Saturday. Game one will begin at 1:00 p.m.
