Ithaca Takes Two from Softball

HOUGHTON, NY—The Houghton Highlanders (6-14, 0-4 Empire 8) rallied late in game two but could not overcome the Ithaca Bombers (9-5, 2-0), who showed why they have won 10 of the past 15 Empire 8 championships Wednesday afternoon at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex, defeating the Highlanders in both ends of a double-header.

Game One:
The Bombers scored a run in each of the first two innings, then plated two in the third and another in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Houghton mounted the beginnings of a rally in the bottom of the fourth after a McKenzie Marti bunt single and Taylor Sile reached on an error.  With runners on first and second and one out Kaylee Jentsch lined one up the middle, but the Ithaca second baseman snared the ball and her momentum carried her across the bag for an inning-ending double-play.

The Highlanders placed two runners on base again in the fifth, but again failed to push a run across.

As the Bombers tacked on five more runs over the final three innings, Ithaca pitcher Haley Congdon secured her third shutout of the season, striking out five and allowing only three hits.

Marti, Bailey Shattell and Alicia Foss each collected a hit apiece for the Highlanders.

Game Two:
For six innings Kaylee Jentsch held the high-powered Ithaca hitters to just one run, but in the top of the seventh the Bombers finally broke through, scoring four runs on four hits.

Houghton rallied in their final at bat.  A leadoff walk by Sile, a hit-by-pitch by Jentsch, and a one-out walk by Barbara Richert loaded the bases for Foss, who promptly singled through the left side, scoring Sile.

A ground ball back to the pitcher forced out Jentsch at the plate, but the catcher went for the game-ending double play and threw the ball away, allowing Richert to score the second run.

The Bombers, however, would quell the rally, retiring the final batter for the win.

Sile went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Jentsch tossed a complete game, allowing only three earned runs and striking out four.

Next Time Out:
Houghton next travels to Elmira on Friday for a doubleheader with the Soaring Eagles at 3:00 p.m.
