AURORA, N.Y. -- After nearly a month since their last contest, Houghton softball returned to action with a two-game sweep on the road at Wells College on Friday.
Houghton took game one, 15-1, and closed the day with a 12-3 win to bring their season record to 2-10.
In game one, the Highlanders erupted for a program-record 23 hits, led by
Tanya Hatton, who turned in a perfect 5-for-5 showing at the plate. Hatton added three runs and four RBI. Her hit total also set a Houghton record. The Highlanders scored three times in the first and third innings, added solo tallies in the fourth and sixth, and closed it out with seven scores in the top of the seventh.
Seven Highlanders had multiple hit games.
Jenny Young finished 5-for-5 at the plate, with
Taylor Sile,
Barbara Richert and
Katelyn Cook each recording three hits.
Getting the win on the mound was
Kaylee Jentsch, who gave up just one run on two hits, while striking out six. Jentsch had a no-hitter through five innings.
Game two saw the Highlanders jump out to a 3-0 lead over the first two innings before the Express scored twice in the bottom half of the third to cut the margin to 3-2. Doubles by Jentsch and Richert sparked a five-run fifth inning to give Houghton an 8-2 lead.
Alishia Foss capped the inning with a two-run single.
Houghton put runners into scoring position in the sixth and seventh and capitalized on two wild pitches to score runs nine and 10. Young drove in the final two scores with a double in the seventh. The Express scored their final run in the last frame.
Jentsch started on the mound, pitching 2 2/3 with five hits and two runs allowed. Sile pitched 4 1/3, allowing one run on four hits while striking out two.
At the plate, Jentsch was 3-for-4, while Foss was 3-for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Young and Hatton scored two runs apiece.
Houghton (2-10) is back in action Saturday when Medaille visits for a doubleheader. The games will be played at Fillmore Central School, just five miles north of Houghton.
