ROCHESTER, NY—The Houghton Highlanders finished their season with a split at Nazareth College, defeating the Golden Flyers in the first game, 8-2, before falling in the nightcap, 0-8.
Game 1: Houghton starter
Taylor Sile (Hilton, NY, Hilton ) tossed a four-hitting, allowing only two runs, to pick up her fifth win of the season.
The Highlanders started strong, scoring five runs in the first frame, three of which came when
Toni Kling (Wellsville, NY, Wellsville ) blasted her first collegiate homerun over the left centerfield fence.
Houghton extended their lead to 8-1 in the fifth when
Alishia Foss (Medina, NY , Medina) hit a bases-clearing double.
Foss finished the game with two hits and four RBI.
Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) and
Jessica Hayner (Waterford, NY, Shenendehowa) also picked up two hits apiece for the Highlanders.
The win was the Highlanders eighth of the season—a program record—and their first in the Empire 8 conference.
Game 2: Nazareth rallied behind starting pitcher Rachel Mertens who shut down the Houghton offense in game two, tossing a five-inning perfect game to win her 10
th game of the year.
The Golden Flyers scored three in the first, three in the second and two in the third, which was all the offense they would need.
