Highlanders Lose a Pair to #23 Cardinals

HOUGHTON, NY—The #23 St. John Fisher Cardinals allowed only three hits and two runs over two games, sweeping the Houghton Highlanders by scores of 8-0 and 16-2 on Friday night at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.

Cardinals' sophomore Lindsey Thayer pitched the first three innings of the first game and the first two innings of the second without allowing a hit and striking out 11 total batters to win her 18th and 19th games of the season.

In the first game Fisher used a five-run second inning to propel them to victory.  They collected 10 hits as a team.

Nicole Fata (Archbald, PA, Valley View) collected the only Highlander hit of the game, a single to left field.

In the second game the Cardinals took advantage of some heavy hitting and some untimely Houghton defensive errors.  Fisher concluded the five-inning game with 15 total hits—only one of which went for extra bases—while Houghton committed seven miscues in the field.

In all, only five of the Cardinals 16 runs were earned.

Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) saw her eight-game hit streak come to an end in the first game but picked up where she left off with an RBI single to right in the third inning.

Toni Kling (Wellsville, NY, Wellsville) collected the only other Highlander hit of the day, a double to right-center in the fourth inning.

Houghton returns to play on Tuesday, April 26 at 5:00 p.m. when they host the Alfred State Pioneers at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.
