GENESEO, NY—The Geneseo Knights capitalized on a six-run inning in the first game and a seven-run two-inning stretch in the second game to sweep the Houghton Highlanders, 10-3 and 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
Game 1: Houghton loaded the bases in the top of the first inning and scored the opening run when
Taylor Sile (Hilton, NY, Hilton ) was hit by a pitch. With no one out it appeared that the Highlanders would open a sizeable lead, but Geneseo starting pitcher Taylor Moore quickly set down the next three Houghton batters without allowing another run to cross the plate.
Geneseo tied the game in the bottom of the first then unloaded six hits and six runs in the second, capped by back-to-back doubles and two homeruns.
Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage ) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Highlanders while teammate
Kaylee Jentsch (Orchard Park, NY, Orchard Park ) also collected two hits.
Game 2: Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning with two on and one out, Shattell singled to right field, scoring
Nicole Fata (Archbald, PA, Valley View ).
After Shattell stole second, Sile ripped a base hit to center, scoring
Katelyn Cook (Clifton Park, NY , Shenendehowa ) and Shattell and giving the Highlanders a 3-2 lead.
That lead, however, would be short-lived, as the Knights answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning then scored four unearned runs in the sixth to seal the victory.
Jentsch pitched a complete game for the Highlanders, taking the loss while allowing eight hits and five walks, striking out one.
Shattell again went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Sile picked up two hits and two RBI.
Houghton returns home on Thursday to take on the RIT Tigers at 5:00 p.m. at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.
