Softball Has Two Setbacks Saturday

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Houghton softball bats, which had been so lively for the majority of their games in Florida, fell silent on Saturday as the Highlanders finished their season opening trip with 16-0 and 10-0 losses to Otterbein and Franklin Colleges, respectively.

Game one against Otterbein saw the Highlanders produce just one hit and suffer four errors. Alishia Foss was 1-for-2 at the plate.

Kaylee Jentsch got the loss on the mound after allowing six runs on seven hits over two innings. Tanya Hatton pitched the final three innings, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits.

Against Franklin, the Highlanders managed three hits but couldn't put any runners across the plate. The Grizzlies scored two runs in the second, two in the third and closed the scoring in the fourth.

Taylor Sile went the distance, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits. Sile, Jentsch and Katelyn Cook got the Houghton hits.

Highlander batters struck out seven times.

Houghton heads north with a 5-5 record and optimism as they get into the heart of their season. The team's next two games are in Maryland vs. Hood College and Salisbury University on March 18 and 19.
