The Houghton College softball team lost both games of the doubleheader Friday evening against the St. John Fisher Cardinals. In game one the Highlanders were shut out by the score of 11-0 and in game two the Highlanders lost 7-4.
In game one the Highlanders struggled offensively, but
Jessica Hayner (Waterford, NY, Shenendehowa) led in the box score going two for two. Hayner was also credited with the loss and Lyndsey Thayer earned the win for the Cardinals.
At the plate in game two the Highlanders were led by
Adrienne Huston (New Waterford, OH, Crestview High School) and
Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage). Huston who went two for three with a double and Shattell went two for four with a RBI. The loss was credited to
Sarah Beirne (Port Jervis, NY, Port Jervis) and Hailey Schoff earned the win for St. John Fisher.
The losses make the Highlanders 4-25 and improve the Cardinals to 26-12.
In game one the Cardinals scored four runs in the first, three in the second, and four in the fourth. The mercy rule came into effect after five innings of play. Â
In game two the Highlanders got on the board first. Huston was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and scored two batters on a Cardinal error. With two outs Shattell roped a double into the gap in left center that scored
Georgianna Stoj (Depew, NY, Sacred Heart Academy) from first to give the Highlanders an early 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Highlanders extended their lead in the second. Hayner led the inning off with double. A sac bunt by
Gabrielle Brewster (Oneida, NY, Vernon-Verona Sherrill) moved Hayner to third and
Carolin Strasswimmer (Greenwich, NY, Greenwich/Adirondack CC) followed that up with a RBI single. Then a double by Huston kept the rally going and Strasswimmer would score later in the inning on another Cardinal error to give the Highlanders a three run lead.
After a scoreless third the Cardinals scored a run in the fourth and then rallied in the fifth scoring five runs on five hits to take a 7-4 lead.
The Highlanders have their last two home games of the year tomorrow against Nazareth College starting at 1 p.m.
