Softball Falls Short of First E8 Win

The Houghton College softball team lost 8-7 and 9-0 in the doubleheader against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks today in Weehawken, NJ.

In game one the Highlanders struck first in the top of the third inning. Adrean Tiffany (Loweville, NY, Loweville Academy) hit a double to left field that scored Adrienne Huston (New Waterford, OH, Crestview High School) form second. Then Georgianna Stoj (Depew, NY, Sacred Heart Academy) singled to right t field scored allowed Samantha Herrick (Canisteo, NY, Canisteo-Greenwood) to score. Than an error by the Ducks' pitcher allowed Tiffany to score from third and the runners to advance. The Highalnders took advantage of the Ducks error and Jessica Hayner (Waterford, NY, Shenendehowa) and Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) singled to add on two more runs and give the Highlanders a 5-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings the Ducks got on the board in the sixth scoring one run on three hits.

In the top of the seventh the Highlanders added on some more insurance when Tiffany hit a single to left field. Stoj followed her single up with a double that scored Tiffany from first. Then Morgan York (Canisteo, NY, Canisteo-Greenwood) hit a single up the middle that forced another error by the Ducks, which allowed Stoj to score from second. Giving the Highlanders a 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Ducks strung together four five hits and scoring four runs, which forced coach Reece to make a pitching change. The change did not cool down the Ducks' bats though. The Ducks scored four more runs earning the win in walk off fashion.

Hayner was credited with the loss, but York pitched a solid six innings for the Highlanders only giving up four earned runs. Gemma was credited with the win for the Ducks.

In game two the Ducks' bats never cooled off scoring three runs in the first inning, two in the third and four in the sixth.

The Highlanders failed to get anything going in game two only recording one hit off of Ducks' pitcher Olivia Gemma who improved to a 7-2 record on the year. Hayner was handed the loss.

The Highlanders head back north tonight for their doubleheader against Elmira College Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
