Angela Layne Meabon had a late introduction to competitive sports growing up in Nyack, New York, a suburb of New York City. She started playing basketball as a freshman, soccer as a sophomore and joined the track team as a junior. It was obvious that basketball was going to be Meabon’s sport as she progressed through high school and her love for the game grew. Her older half-brother, who played at the Division I level, helped draw her deeper into the sport and playing with boys in the more urban part of her town helped her hone her skills, competitive fire and determination to succeed.
Her sophomore year was monumental for Meabon. It was when she realized she wanted to pursue basketball in college and when she gave her life to Christ at a Christian basketball camp. She began going to church, became active in youth group, and got connected with Jennifer Amos, a former Houghton player who was returning to the college as an assistant coach.
Meabon followed Amos to Houghton, where she joined a women’s basketball program that was in the midst of one of its most successful eras. The young athletic forward was a key reserve for the Highlanders as a freshman and sophomore, but became a key contributor over her final two seasons.
During her time at Houghton, Meabon was a participant in two conference championship and two national tournaments. She averaged more than 14 points per game over her final two seasons, with career-highs of 15.6 points and 7.6 rebounds as a senior. She scored a career-high 41 points as a junior, which ranks second all-time in program history. She finished her career seventh in career points (1,197), sixth in career rebounds (785), and third in career blocks (95). She was named first team all-conference as a sophomore and senior and second team all-conference as a junior. She was also named Honorable Mention WBCA All-America as a junior.
Despite the accolades, Meabon says her most memorable moments involve being a part of the team, making friends, developing silly sayings, watching movies and dancing off campus. Coach Lord provided great support for her, and she appreciates Charity Kleitz and Janelle Tombs for pouring into her life.
Meabon went on to earn a master’s degree in education and briefly pursued a teaching career. She was a stay at home mom for eight years and currently serves part-time in the food service industry.
